Regattas

Royal Yacht Club of Victoria is conveniently and safely tucked away in Hobson’s Bay at the northern end of Port Phillip, just several miles across the water from the city of Melbourne. This makes for a breathtaking backdrop to any racing activities and with its associated attractions there can be few more spectacular venues for regattas and major sailing events.

You do not have to be a sailor to enjoy the buzz that always surrounds any regatta. Bring your family along as we can arrange spectator boats to watch the racing, or they may wish to enjoy some of the many sightseeing activities on offer.

As a venue Royals has successfully hosted the 1999 49er worlds, the year 2000 4.2 metre worlds and the 2007 Flying 15 nationals. The excellent Sail Melbourne ISAF even sees sailors from around the world come to Melbourne to compete on this racecourse every year.

More recently, the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV) was also proud host the 2015 Para World Championships. The international event took place on 26th November - 3rd December 2015. Athletes from 31 countries attended the event and it was considered to be a massive success!

Located on the shore of historic maritime port, Williamstown offers a huge range of restaurants, cafes, shopping, beaches and entertainment. There is accommodation available for all budgets from services apartments through to B&Bs, and some homestay options. There are two chandleries in town, and many marine professionals offering sail-making, rigging and boat-building services. Melbourne has been voted the world’s liveable city and can be reached via a short drive or a scenic ferry ride up the Yarra River from Gem Pier right next to the Royals courthouse.

The city has a fabulous range of art galleries and museums, including the unique Federation Square, whilst the shopping is without equal. The theatres carry many of the latest shows, while the Australian opera and ballet perform regularly. Year round there are always events to attend, such as the Australian Open tennis tournament and football matches at the MCG, the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix of the Australian International Air Show among those you may wish to include in your visit. Then there’s the sights of Victoria, making any holiday taken around your regatta even more exciting.

If you are looking for somewhere truly special, come and race with us at Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, for what we’re sure will be an experience to savour. Along with the attractions of Williamstown, Melbourne and Victoria, you may well be in for the trip of a lifetime.

Lipton Cup Regatta

The Lipton Cup Regatta: a fun, affordable weekend of sailing for racing, cruising and classic yachts, sports boats and trailable yachts, and off-the-beach boats. The aim has been to create an event that is all encompassing and appeals to as many classes of boat as possible – so there is really no excuse not to take part!

The event has grown and developed in recent years and is continually being refined to ensure it meets the needs of sailors. The sailing program caters for all sailing enthusiasts, offering high-quality racing for the serious racing fraternity and an enjoyable weekend's sailing for the cruising boats. The northern waters of Port Phillip offer excellent sailing, dramatic views of the city of Melbourne, and fresh summer sea breezes.

While the racing is serious, there is a great social atmosphere to the event, with live music as well as good food and drink available from the clubhouse. After sailing, relax to on the lawn at Royals while enjoying the warm, friendly atmosphere and stunning views.

The Regatta is conducted by the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria in partnership with the Williamstown Sailing Club and the Port Melbourne Yacht Club. The Lipton Cup will take place between 19-20 November 2016. Visit the Lipton Cup Website for further information on the event.

Volunteer

Help is required for the Lipton Cup Regatta which usually takes place in November each year. On water support is a priority and a small number of on land volunteers are also required so any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

If you are able to volunteer during the Lipton Regatta please contact the office on (03) 9397 1277 or email rycv@rycv.asu.au. Let us know if you need powerboat safety course, first aid, radio course or crane course as we would like you to be suitably prepared for the task you are assigned.
