Cath Beaufort of RYCV and a crew of 9 girls, the majority being Royals members recently competed in the Gals regatta hosted by Townsville Yacht Club. This was the second regatta as was timed to be held on the weekend straight after Magnetic Island Race Week. Many agreed that this timing was ideal given the boats and crews that are already in the area.
As well as local Townsville crews, participants also came from Newcastle, Mooloolaba and Tasmania. Eight boats competed which was an increase on year one, with a ninth boat, Unhinged, unfortunately having to withdraw due to damage sustained in practice. Great sportsmanship was shown by other crews with most hosting extra crew from Unhinged so that all had a chance to participate in the regatta.
The format of seven races in two days proved challenging and while we only achieved one podium finish for the regatta, we very much enjoyed the racing and hospitality and race management shown by TYC and are keen to return again next year to continue supporting the event.
Thanks to James Permezel for generously lending Charm Offensive for the team to sail on. If you are planning on doing Maggie in 2019, do think about staying on for the weekend to either crew or perhaps lend your boat (one male is allowed on board).
Congratulations to Bindy Pyke (pictured) for picking up the annual award for sportswomanship after sustaining one or 2 injuries but soldiering on.
