Sailing in the Whitsundays

It is the time of year when some of our fortunate club members head north for racing in the idyllic Whitsundays. Each year there is a migration to the warmer climes rewarded with some spectacular scenery and sailing.

The Queensland yacht clubs run a series of races that have proven popular with many Royals boats and members plus entries from other Victorian clubs.  The racing starts with Airlie Beach race Week (6-16 August), followed by Hamilton Island Race Week (18-25 August) and finishes up with Magnetic Island Race Week (30 August-September).

This year Paul Lindeman in Biddy Hu II will be there as usual, together with some new additions, namely:

  • Greg Snowball in his Swan 60, Dreamcatcher III. Dreamcatcher will be crewed largely by Royals members including flag officers Rear Commodore Doug Shields and Vice Commodore John Duffin. In total there will be another 12 club members sailing on the boat at various times including past commodore Bruce Taylor and Col Anderson.
  • Gerry Cantwell in his new Martens 49 CarreraS, again with many club members sailing on the boat, including Bernie and Susan Webber.  Gerry recently purchased CarreraS in New Zealand and has already competed in some major races.
  • Ray Nankervis will be sailing his Buizen 48, Karm, together with many of the old Kate crew, including John Raff.

At Magnetic Island race Week, a few additional Royals boats join the competition. Brian Yarnell in Mika, Tim Campbell in Private Equity, James Permezel with Charm Offensive, and Gary Prestedge in One for the Road.

With all these boats and members up north this year we have put back the AGM to give some time for boats and crew to get back to Melbourne and to reality!
