Last weekend Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron hosted the 28th Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta. The regatta had a fantastic turnout of 27 entrants and attracted crew members from all Australian States, Darwin and New Zealand. Royals was represented by Cath Beaufort and her crew on Up ‘n Go (with Cath competing in her 22nd Regatta) and Clare Olding and her crew on Vertigo.
4 or 5 other regular Royals sailors also crewed on other boats showing a great level of participation and support for the regatta from Royals. Cath commented that it is a fantastic regatta to encourage women in sailing and was therefore important to support. It’s a great sport – challenging, always learning, team work and camaraderie.
Key to participation and the success of the regatta is the generosity of boat owners who lend their boats to crews for the weekend. Thanks to the owners of Merak and Recycled Reputation for generously lending their boats to visiting crews from Mooloolaba and RQYS respectively, and Anthony for lending Escape to a New Zealand crew (pictured) who successfully won the S80 division. Representatives from Up n’ Go, Merak and Escape are also pictured.
