Powerboat training at the Royals Training Centre is a great way to get your Victorian Powerboat Licence and develop your powerboat handling skills at the same time.
Royals Training Centre runs all three courses in the Australian Sailing (formerly Yachting Australia) Discover Powerboating Program. We also offer the 4 hour Transport Safety Victoria (TSV) accredited theory-only powerboat licensing course. Australian Sailing courses are recognized across Australia and can be used to obtain a recreational powerboat Licence in most states, including Victoria.

Theory Only Powerboat Licence Course
This 4 hour course is theory based and includes the Transport Safety Victoria (TSV) accredited licensing test. Upon successful completion of the course you will receive a Transport Safety Victoria certificate to take to VicRoads in order to obtain you Recreational Powerboat Operator Licence. To obtain your license there is a fee payable to VicRoads. Personal Watercraft (PWC) endorsement testing is available at no extra cost. Courses are usually run most Thursday nights and Saturday mornings.

Practical Powerboat Course
Passing the Marine Licence course does not teach you how to operate a powerboat, but this course does. This 3 hour course is aimed at people who have already obtained their powerboat licence through the 4 hour Theory Course and would like to improve their boat handling skills. Course dates are set as required so please contact us for dates.
Cost: $150 on our training boat. Arrangements can also be made to complete the course on your own boat at a time and place that suits you.
Start Powerboating Course
The Start Powerboating Course is the first course in the Australian Sailing Powerboat program and is aimed at those wishing to develop the skills and knowledge to safely operate a recreational powerboat. The course is run over 14 hours including one day on the water, learning practical powerboat skills under the guidance of a qualified powerboat Instructor. Upon successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate to take to VicRoads in order to receive their Powerboat license. To obtain your license there is a fee payable to VicRoads. Testing for Personal Watercraft (PWC) endorsement is also available.
Cost: $295 per person
Powerboat Handling Course
The Powerboat Handling Course covers the syllabus in the recreational course in more depth and adds a basic navigation component. This course is a prerequisite for the Australian Sailing Instructor Qualification. The course is run over 17 hours and like the recreational course, is recognised for licensing purposes by Transport Safety Victoria (TSV). Upon successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate to take to VicRoads in order to receive their Powerboat license. To obtain your license there is a fee payable to VicRoads. Testing for Personal Watercraft (PWC) endorsement is available at no extra cost.
Cost: $360 per person
Safety Boat Course
The Safety Boat course is aimed at those wanting to increase their fine boat handling skills or assist in rescue boat operations. Topics covered include righting capsized dinghy’s, recovering people from the water, Search patterns and includes a night time navigation exercise The Powerboat Handling Course is a perquisite for this course.
One-on-one tuition is available for if you would like to work on your practical powerboating skills.
