Port Phillip Womens Sailing Events

In addition to the Royals women's sailing events, you can also take part in events right across Port Phillip. This includes bay racing, passage races and training courses - some of these events are listed below.

You can find out more by visiting Yachting Victoria's Women and Girls In Sailing (WGIS) website.

Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series

The Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series (PPWCS) combines the existing ‘signature’ women’s events from the five keelboat clubs at the top of the bay into one event, all contested on the waters of Port Phillip. Since its establishment in 2013, all host clubs have provided great racing on the water and first-class off-the-water entertainment for each of the five race days of the series.

The 2015 season saw the establishment of a new perpetual trophy to encourage increased participation by all clubs. The ‘Kingston Trophies PPWCS Perpetual Team Trophy’ is calculated using a formula that rewards higher levels of participation in racing, the percentage of entries from their club relative to their club boat register, the percentage of females in the crew for each race day with bonus points for Youth skippers (under 25yrs) and Senior skippers (over 60yrs).

Port Phillip Women’s Passage Series

Yachting Victoria's (YV) Women & Girls in Sailing (WGIS) Committee have combined new six race passage series for female keelboat sailors, the Port Phillip Women’s Passage Series (PPWPS) to be contested each season from September to May.

Following the success of the Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series (PPWCS), the five host clubs Hobson’s Bay Yacht Club (HBYC), Royal Brighton Yacht Club (RBYC), Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS), Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV) and Sandringham Yacht Club (SYC) have each provided a passage race event and will be joined by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV) with their annual Women Skippers & Navigators Race to provide the six races.

The series provides further opportunities for female keelboat sailors to hone their skills over longer passages without the pressures of short course racing and introduce them to developing new skills in navigation, radio operations and weather prediction across different sectors and over longer periods of time.

Entry to the PPWPS is free and automatic when you enter any one of the six races via the host club website. All host clubs will charge an entry fee for their own events. To encourage participation, your best three race results will count for your final score. Racing will be conducted in both AMS and PHS divisions.

Australian Women's Keelboat Regatta (AWKR)

The Australian Women's Keelboat Regatta is the only all female keelboat regatta in Australia and the 2016 fleet comprised 26 keelboats and 171 sailors from all over Australia.  In 2017 we are aiming to increase the regatta to 200 sailors from Asia Pacific. Held annually at the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron in St Kilda over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June, the AWKR is a notoriously fun, often cold and always very competitive regatta.
