Last Saturday 6 May was the Phoenix Trophy, being the glamour finale race for the RYCV 2016/17 Summer Series.
Due to predicted challenging weather conditions, there was a change of plans from the traditional race to Queenscliff and 16 Royals yachts headed off from the Club under spinnaker down the Bay and then back up wind, which turned into a reach as a front moved through.
The highlight of this stern chaser handicap event was the win by Soirée Bleu (Doug Lithgow), but the crew missed receiving their $500 first prize as they weren’t at the Saturday Night Presentation!
Storm (Tony Sneddon) was 2nd and Kate (John Raff) was 3rd. John was overheard saying “the secret to Kate’s success today was being the biggest boat [by far] and having the Club handicapper on board!”
A special mention goes to Temesis (Doug Hem) which went to extraordinary lengths to make sure they came last and ensure Doug won his own Wooden Spoon Trophy…top job Doug!
Saturday evening’s festivities went off with a bang at the Melbourne Marina in Docklands. Some of the 10 crews who decided not to race also turned up for dinner and the fun that went on into the small wee hours. Congratulations to Mika (Brian Yarnall) who won “Best on Ground” for the biggest party boat.
Katrina Economou (Laurelle) won first prize for the raffle which raised over $400 for our annual fundraiser, “Cottage by the Sea”. A special thanks to Vue Grande, Queencliff for their support of this worthy cause.
Where will the Phoenix Trophy take us all next year? (Just ask our Race Director, David LeRoy)
