The crew of the Royals based Thompson 7 Anger Management participated in the 50th edition of this famous race with over two hundred and twenty other yachts that included Trailer sailors, multihulls and sportsboats, split into a number of divisions in three separate starts.
For all competitors quite a frustrating race with little or no wind for the duration which commenced at 7.45pm with the faster sportsboats and multihulls away first
Our elation at being the first mono across Lake Wellington and around the first turning mark at Plover Point just behind the tri Evil Gnome (which promptly ran into the bank) after an excellent start was short lived as we stopped and all those close behind kept piling in, ultimately emerging in about eighth place at the other end of Straits after dodging backward facing multihulls attacking the local flora.
We finally caught most of those we should in front to claim a just respectable fourth on line, including all of the multihulls, albeit a long way behind the first three after fifteen hours sailing.
Congratulations to David E & Co and his radical “rectangular main” for taking overall handicap honours in Division D.
